Former Lyon coach Claude Puel has been shortlisted by Villarreal.
The Yellow Submarine are on the lookout for a new manager after parting company with Juan Carlos Garrido earlier this week.
Puel has stated his desire to take a year out of the game and turned down an approach from Belgian giants Club Brugge recently.
But there is understood to be contact between the Frenchman and Villarreal, with negotiations quite possibly due to get under way later today.
The opportunity to take charge of one of La Liga’s elite clubs and a side which often enjoys Champions League football could be too good for Puel to turn down.
Villarreal currently sit 17th in the Spanish top flight and have much work to do in the second half of the season.
