Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has been voted the African Player of the Year by the continent’s confederation.

The former Barcelona star was judged to have had an exceptional 12 months, during which time he helped the Citizens to the FA Cup and has also led the side to the top of the Premier League.

Toure pipped Marseille midfielder Andre Ayew, who finished second, while Barcelona’s Mali schemer Seydou Keita came third.

Toure succeeds Samuel Eto’o with the award.

City will have to make do without the powerful midfielder next month as he takes part in the African Cup of Nations.

There Toure will be hoping for more success on his home continent.
