Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes that Wigan Athletic copped a beating that had been on the cards for some time.
The champions simply demolished Roberto Martinez’ Latics side yesterday, running out 5-0 winners at Old Trafford in their Premier League clash.
Goals from Park Ji-Sung and Antonio Valencia were complimented by a Dimitar Berbatov hat-trick, as the Bulgarian reminded Ferguson just what he is capable of.
For the United manager, his decision to select Berbatov was vindicated, and the size of the victory not a surprise.
"As I said some weeks ago, somebody was going to suffer", Ferguson told MUTV.
"We’re really hitting good form now and there’s a real goal threat about us from all departments.
"If we’re top of the league or joint-top with City by New Year’s Day I’ll be happy."
And the United manager praised Berbatov, who delivered a reminder of his capabilities.
"It was the right game for him", said Ferguson.
"I needed his height for set-pieces against us and he’s weighed in with a hat-trick. We’re really pleased for him and it helps with confidence."
Next up for United is a home clash against strugglers Blackburn Rovers, before 2012 kicks off with a trip to St. James’ Park to face Newcastle.
