Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed that he is closing on a deal to bring Thierry Henry back to the club for a two-month loan stint.

Wenger wants to snap up Henry as cover for forward pair Marouane Chamakh and Gervinho, who will head to the African Cup of Nations in January.

And the former Barcelona star is available due to the MLS, where he plays for New York Red Bulls, being on a break until March.

"It was my idea", admitted Wenger, who spoke to Henry once the Frenchman began training with Arsenal to keep sharp over the winter.

"He was happy about it, but it was my idea", added the Gunners boss.

"We are doing it because Gervinho and Chamakh go to the African Nations Cup and to cover for two months is ideal.

"He is still class and has quality. He still has pace."

And Wenger cannot see any risks involved in bringing Henry back.

"It can only be positive because he has exceptional talent. He is experienced, he is quality and can help the players on and off the pitch."

Nothing though has been agreed yet, with the Arsenal manager stressing the MLS will need to sign off the move.

"The deal is not completed and at the moment we can’t announce anything. It is about insurance and I don’t take care of that, but we have to respect all the agreements we need to find with the MLS."
