Tottenham Hotspur are considering launching a €12M bid for Basel attacking midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri.
The 20-year-old is one of the hottest properties in European football and Basel were as much shocked as they were delighted when he snubbed interest from the likes of Hamburg and Lazio in the summer transfer window.
Shaqiri believed that his development would be better served by another season at St. Jakob Park and that has so far proven to be the case, with the left-footed schemer helping Basel to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League at Manchester United’s expense.
Basel have steeled themselves against losing Shaqiri in the winter window and expect that the lure of a Champions League Round of 16 clash with Bayern Munich, along with the chance to lift another Swiss Super League title, should keep the youngster at the club.
Tottenham could test that theory though by offering Shaqiri the chance to move to the English Premier League to join a title-chasing outfit.
Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is alive to the very real possibility he could lose Luka Modric next summer, with the Croatian recently giving no guarantees about his future at White Hart Lane post Euro 2012.
Snapping up Shaqiri would give Redknapp a ready-made replacement, though the former Portsmouth boss could be forced to wait until the summer window to get his man.
