Arsene Wenger has admitted he will need to bring a left back to Arsenal in the winter transfer window.

The Gunners lost defender Thomas Vermaelen to a calf strain in their 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers yesterday, placing more injury pressure on the side’s squad.

Vermaelen was deputising in a full back slot because Arsenal have suffered injury blows to Andre Santos, Kieran Gibbs, Bacary Sagna and Carl Jenkinson.

And Wenger will now look to enter the market to remedy the situation, but insisted he is only targeting a loan deal.

"We lost Vermaelen for two or three weeks, so I have to look if I can find somebody, only a loan.

"It would be stupid for us to drop points because we don’t have a left back."

Arsenal have recently been scouting Toulouse left back Aymen Abdennour, but it is unclear whether the Ligue 1 side would allow the 22-year-old to head to the Emirates Stadium on loan.
