Jose Mourinho has reaffirmed his intention is to stay with Real Madrid and insisted that when he spoke of returning to England in a couple of years, he meant it could be as many as 20 years before he heads back to the Premier League.

The Portuguese is known to have his eye on succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager, but there have been rumbles of discontent in the Spanish capital over what was seen by some as overt pitching for the job from Mourinho.

And he has moved to clarify his position.

"Don’t translate a couple of years literally", insisted Mourinho to Real Madrid’s TV channel.

"It is a term used in England to mean in a few years.

"It could be two, three, four or 20", added the Los Blancos boss.

"The best years of this team are yet to come. It is impossible to say how long I’ll stay, but what counts is the intention.

"The intent is there."
