FC Twente striker Luuk de Jong has rejected the chance to move to Serie A side Fiorentina.

De Jong has been interesting two English Premier League clubs of late, with Liverpool and Newcastle United both linked with swoops for his services – but it is from Italy that the first concrete offer has arrived.

La Viola were keen to steal a march over their rivals and quickly take the Dutchman to Serie A.

However, De Jong, who has also expressed his desire to play in England, turned down the chance to pursue a transfer to Fiorentina according to his father.

"With Luuk I discussed a transfer proposal from Fiorentina", explained George de Jong.

"Luuk has decided not to follow it up; he stays at FC Twente."

The 21-year-old’s decision will be a big boost to new Twente coach Steve McClaren, who has just been appointed to once again take charge of the club he led to the 2010 Eredivisie title.
