Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has revealed that he would rather win La Liga than the Champions League.

Picking up this season’s Champions League would be a very special occasion for Los Blancos, with the victory marking the tenth time the club would have won the famous trophy.

But for Mourinho, breaking the stranglehold of Barcelona in Spain is more important than success in a competition which, by his own admission, often rewards teams that simply do not deserve to win.

And for that reason, La Liga is Mourinho’s number one.

"The domestic championship occupies my thoughts more than anything else", said the Real Madrid coach.

"I’d rather be [La Liga] champions than win the Champions League, because the latter is sometimes won by teams who do not deserve it.

"They can win through small details.

"Often things happen in a league that should not happen, such as a significant injury being picked up by opponents.

"A national championship has much more competition and is thus usually won by the team who are most entitled to it. That’s why I prefer the title."
