Paul Scholes has come out of retirement to play for Manchester United until the end of the current campaign.

The midfielder has been included on the bench for United’s FA Cup clash against Manchester City this afternoon.

Scholes retired at the end of last season, but remained at Old Trafford in a coaching capacity and has impressed Sir Alex Ferguson to such an extent in training that the Scot has persuaded the 37-year-old to lace up his boots once again.

United have been suffering from a number of injuries to midfield performers, with Tom Cleverley and Darren Fletcher experiencing prolonged spells on the sidelines.

And Scholes is delighted to be able to answer the call.

"I’m delighted the manager feels I can still make a contribution to the team", admitted the former England star.
