Bayer Leverkusen have rubbished chatter which suggested Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov was in talks over a switch to the Bundesliga outfit.

Berbatov’s contract at Old Trafford runs out in the summer, though Red Devils’ boss Sir Alex Ferguson has indicated the club will activate a clause allowing them to extend the deal for another 12 months.

The Bulgarian hitman himself may be ready to leave however in order to chase first team football – though Leverkusen have confirmed he is not in talks with them even if this is the case.

“I read that Dimitar had flown to Frankfurt for talks with us because we are in for him”, said Leverkusen director Wolfgang Holzhauser.

“That’s news to me”, added the German.

“I can never say never, but we’re not looking to sign him at this moment in time.”

Berbatov has previously played for Leverkusen; the German side sold the striker to Tottenham Hotspur in 2006 after a five-year stint.
