UEFA have warned Europe’s clubs that they must get their books in order soon.
European football’s governing body is introducing financial fair play rules which could mean player bans and even points deductions from the 2014/15 season for those clubs who are the worst offenders.
And UEFA see no evidence that progress is being made towards putting football on a sustainable footing.
UEFA have released figures which showed clubs lost more than €1.6 billion in 2010, a figure which represented a 36% increase and is the worst recorded.
"This is the last wake-up call for everyone, this trend has to change very quickly to safeguard European football", UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino commented.
"We must end this negative spiral and gamble for success.
"These losses cannot continue."
