Mainz have picked up striker Mohamed Zidan for the third time and in so doing scuppered Lucas Barrios’ exit from Borussia Dortmund.

Zidan, who joined Mainz on loan in 2005 before signing permanently in 2007, had seen a deal with the Bundesliga side fall through earlier in the week.

It has though been resurrected and Dortmund have bid farewell to the player they signed from Hamburg in 2008.

"Mohamed Zidan corresponds exactly to what we want from a player", said Mainz manager Christian Heidel.

"He wanted to come to us, he knows the Bundesliga and Mainz very well."

Zidan’s move to Mainz ended Wolfsburg’s hopes of signing Barrios, while it is now almost certain that the Ruhr giants will not allow the Paraguayan to move to any other foreign club before the window closes – German clubs could buy until 18:00 CET, but can sell until 00:00 CET.
