Jose Mourinho is keeping a close watch on Axel Witsel’s situation at Benfica, according to sources in Portugal.
The Real Madrid manager has paid close attention to the Belgian’s progress at the Estadio da Luz in the current campaign and could well choose to raid the Lisbon giants in a similar fashion to last season, when Fabio Coentrao was tempted to the Spanish capital.
Witsel has been one of Benfica’s success stories since his switch from Standard Liege last summer and Jorge Jesus’ side will not easily part with his services.
The 23-year-old has already been linked with a trio of English Premier League clubs, with Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United all thought to hold an interest.
Benfica are even believed to have already turned down an offer of some €20M from an unnamed club for Witsel.
Mourinho will have to pay a substantial sum to snap up the midfielder, if he chooses to firm up his interest.
Witsel is under contract with Benfica until 2016.
