Croatia midfielder Luka Modric appreciates that Andres Iniesta is perhaps the best player in the world in his respective role, but still feels his team can compete with Spain.
Slaven Bilic’s men are in Group C at Euro 2012 alongside Spain, Italy and the Republic of Ireland – and Croatia have already comfortably beaten the latter 3-1.
Harder tests against the Spaniards and the Italians lie ahead and these challenges will need to be navigated if Modric and his team-mates are to progress to the quarter-finals.
Despite the quality of both sides however, the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder is confident.
“Spain played Italy but remain favourites for the next round”, said the playmaker, reflecting on Spain’s 1-1 draw against the Azzurri.
“They have some great players, and Iniesta represents the best type of player in his position worldwide.
“But we are confident we can beat anyone if we play as we can, and that includes the Spaniards.”
Next up for Croatia are Italy on Thursday, while Spain play Ireland.
