The race for Benfica midfielder Axel Witsel is hotting up and, according to respected Portuguese daily O Jogo, Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has intervened on behalf of the Citizens.

Witsel has been linked with AC Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Roma in recent weeks and Benfica fully expect offers for the Belgian to arrive at the Estadio da Luz this summer.

It has even been suggested that, so sure is he of his departure, Witsel has already bid farewell to a number of his team-mates at the Portuguese giants.

And Kompany seems to have indicated that Manchester City will be in the race for the 23-year-old.

The defender is believed to have spoken to Witsel to find out the current state of play over his future, and to stress that he should not make a decision before hearing what Manchester City have to say.

Kompany would love to welcome the former Standard Liege midfielder to Eastlands for next season and Witsel is thought to be very highly rated by Roberto Mancini, boss of the English champions.

Benfica snapped Witsel up for a bargain price of around €7M last summer, but hope to realise as much as €40M from selling the player.

Witsel was highly impressive at the Estadio da Luz in 2011/12 and also shone in the Champions League.
