Mathieu Flamini’s decision to reject AC Milan’s offer of a new contract could open the door for the Rossoneri to move to sign Alberto Aquilani.
Milan want to keep Flamini, whose contract at the San Siro is due to expire at the end of this month, but they have only offered the former Arsenal midfielder a salary of under half the amount he currently earns.
For Flamini, who missed most of the 2011/12 campaign through injury, this is not good enough and, barring a last minute U-turn, the midfielder is on his way out of Milan.
This could lead to the Rossoneri reappraising their chances of signing Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani.
The Italian spent all last season with Milan, but did not make the requisite number of appearances to compel the Serie A giants to sign him on a permanent basis; the Rossoneri have deemed Aquilani’s asking price too high.
Now however, developments concerning Flamini could see Milan return for Aquilani, the club’s vice-president Adriano Galliani has admitted.
“Another midfielder will arrive before 31st August”, Galliani told Gazzetta dello Sport.
“It could be Aquilani or somebody else.
“We haven’t spoken to Aquilani – he is a Liverpool player.”
