Manchester United are considering moving for Real Madrid’s Argentine midfielder Fernando Gago, according to Sportitalia, as a cheaper alternative to Tottenham Hotspur schemer Luka Modric.

Gago spent last season on loan in Serie A with Roma, featuring 30 times in the Italian top flight. However, the Giallorossi cooled on activating their purchase option, with the amount for completion deemed too high. Roma are thought to still want Gago, but for a much lower price.

Now the cultured midfielder’s future is up in the air as he is surplus to requirements at Real Madrid and no move to Roma has yet been sealed; Jose Mourinho shipped Gago out of the Bernabeu last summer and is likely to have no place in his plans for the player once again.

The 26-year-old, who arrived in Spain billed as a new Fernando Redondo, struggled with injuries and failed to capture consistent form at the Bernabeu.

And with a season of first team football under his belt at the Giallorossi, Gago will want to continue to enjoy minutes on the pitch, rather than warm the bench in La Liga.

Gago has been linked with a return to his homeland, but joining Roma or Manchester United would surely fit the bill for a midfielder who is ready to continue to strive to make his mark in Europe.

Real Madrid are thought to be looking for between €5M and €7M for the Argentine.
