Atletico Madrid have reached an agreement with Chelsea to keep goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois at the Vicente Calderon for next season.

Courtois joined Chelsea last summer from Belgian champions Genk, but was instantly sent out on loan for the 2011/12 campaign by the Blues, with Atletico Madrid his destination.

The shot-stopper had big boots to fill in the Spanish capital as Atletico had just sold highly-rated number 1 David de Gea to Manchester United.

Courtois though took to Spanish football like a duck to water and was soon being rated as the third best goalkeeper in the league, behind Barcelona’s Victor Valdes and Real Madrid’s Iker Casillas.

For Atletico, keeping Courtois has been a priority and with Petr Cech firmly between the sticks at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea are happy to play ball.

The Blues will pick up €750,000 from Atletico for loaning Courtois for another 12 months, while depending upon the club’s performances next season, Chelsea could receive an extra €250,000.

Courtois will also be allowed to play in the UEFA Super Cup on 31st August, when Europa League winners Atletico play Champions League winners Chelsea.
