Kevin De Bruyne has signalled his intention to avoid suffering a Romelu Lukaku-type fate at Chelsea next season.
The Belgian midfielder was signed by the Champions League winners in the January transfer window, but loaned back to Genk, the club he was bought from, to complete the campaign in the Jupiler Pro League.
Now the 20-year-old is due at Stamford Bridge and, should he not be loaned out for more first team experience, will look to make an impact in England, avoiding the fate which befell Lukaku last year.
Lukaku was signed from Anderlecht one year ago amid much fanfare, but hardly featured in the Premier League and soon grew frustrated at his bit-part at Stamford Bridge.
That is not something De Bruyne wants to happen to him.
“I want to adapt quickly”, the 20-year-old told Zevende Dag.
“I have not thought too much about Chelsea lately, I was on holiday with friends. Now, I live from day to day and I will be extremely dedicated from the very first training session at Chelsea.
“Obviously I will have to get used things. I will train with players I have watched and respected for 15 years, but I want to quickly improve the level that I am at.
“I don’t want to have a situation happen to me as happened to Lukaku. I just want to play, but I realise the competition is strong.”
And De Bruyne insists that he will not be disappointed if he is loaned out to another club to gain more experience, though he is targeting the chance to prove himself with the Blues in pre-season.
“I won’t feel down if I am loaned to a weaker team just to play”, said the midfielder.
“Chelsea have made a few transfers since I signed. Before these new arrivals it was agreed that I would join on 4th July and go on tour to the United States. I will then have the chance to prove myself and analyse my situation.”
