Former Liverpool star Harry Kewell is to return to England after just one season in Australian football.
Kewell joined Melbourne Victory last summer on a two-year deal, but he activated a clause to terminate that agreement last month.
It has been reported that the mother of his wife, Sheree Murphy, is ill in England, and Kewell wants to move back to be by her side.
"It is one of the toughest decisions we’ve had to make", said Kewell in a statement.
"I enjoyed playing for Victory and living in Melbourne, but family comes first and together we made a decision that it was best for us to remain close to our family at this time."
Kewell may now look to return to the game for with an English club and the 33-year-old is likely to have no shortage of offers.
