Real Madrid are expected to step up their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luka Modric next week when the Croatian schemer’s representatives meet Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.

According to Madrid-based daily Marca, Modric wants to leave White Hart Lane and head to the Bernabeu this summer – and Real Madrid are only too happy to welcome the 26-year-old.

Los Blancos are believed to have made signing the Croatia international a priority and the Spanish champions are mooted as being willing to offer as much as €40M to ensure a deal is done.

Modric is thought to be desperate to return to the Champions League, which Spurs cannot offer for next season, while it would also be understandable were the prospect of playing under Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid to excite him.

Spurs battled to keep hold of Modric last summer when Chelsea made two formal bids to sign the playmaker, and were successful in fending off the Blues.

Whether Tottenham can see off interest from Real Madrid however is another matter, while the London giants may also be more willing to sell the Croatian to a club not in the Premier League.

Despite Modric’s desire, Spurs remain very much in the driving seat over the player’s future, with the midfielder under contract at White Hart Lane until 2016.
