Bert van Marwijk has left his post as Holland national team coach.
Van Marwijk suffered disappointment earlier this month at Euro 2012 with the Oranje as he was unable to lead the country out of a tough looking Group B, which contained Denmark, Germany and Portugal.
Now the coach, who steered Holland to the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa, has fallen on his sword.
"I have severe doubts, but decided this is the right step to take", said Van Marwijk.
"The KNVB [Dutch FA, ed.] is grateful to Van Marwijk; he had exceptionally good performances in the finals at the World Cup and also reached first place in the FIFA rankings", said KNVB managing director Bert van Oostveen.
"I have had a very good feeling throughout our cooperation", he added.
"Of course it is sad to part ways early, but we must be realistic."
