Jan Vertonghen’s proposed move to Tottenham Hotspur is being held up by a wrangle over a clause in his contract entitling him to an amount of any transfer fee paid.
Despite Ajax and Spurs agreeing a fee for the stopper at the weekend, believed to be around €12M, Vertonghen is understood to have a clause entitling him to pocket 15% of that amount – and it is this which is causing the hold up, as Ajax are not keen on honouring the term.
Vertonghen is due to report for Ajax pre-season training on 2nd July, but the Dutch side’s coach Frank de Boer feels the situation can be resolved before then.
“It’s very close. But as long as there is no agreement he’ll be in on 2nd July to report for training”, said the Ajax coach at a press conference.
“There are still some things on the business side. He has an interest [in the move, ed.], but Ajax…
“I’ve been in a similar situation before, and ultimately it can be worked out”, said De Boer, sounding optimistic.
Vertonghen has been desperate to move to White Hart Lane for some time, but with only one year remaining on his current deal at Ajax, may feel in the driving seat over the clause dispute.
