David Beckham has been left out of Great Britain’s Olympic football squad.
Team GB are due to compete as the host nation at the London 2012 Olympic Games and Beckham, who was instrumental in helping to bring the games to the UK’s capital city, was hoping to be selected.
But Team GB coach Stuart Pearce can only pick three players over the age of 23 – and Beckham has not made the cut.
"Everyone knows how much playing for my country has always meant to me. So I would have been honoured to have been part of this unique Team GB squad", said Beckham in a statement to the Associated Press, after hearing of the news.
"Naturally I am very disappointed, but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me. And like everyone, I will be hoping they can win the gold."
Pearce is thought to have selected Manchester City defender Micah Richards, Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs and Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy as Team GB’s three overage players.
