German giants Bayern Munich have announced that Matthias Sammer will be the next sporting director of the club after the Bavarians fired the Christian Nerlinger on Friday.
Sammer joins Bayern Munich after serving the German Football Federation for six years from April 2006 to June 2012. The ex-German international was released on Monday and will join the Bavarians with immediate effect.
The club confirmed the appointment in a press release and stated that Sammer will serve as the ‘board member for sport’. Bayern Munich also indicated that after Nerlinger had different opinions about the club’s ambition and strategy with other board members, both parties decided to part ways.
Sammer found great success as the sporting director for Germany and even though the team could not win any trophies in his six-year tenure, the ex-midfielder performed his duties admirably. Sammer oversaw the development of young players while supervising the training of young German coaches as well during his time with the German football federation.
The former European Footballer of the Year coached two sides – Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart – before joining Germany’s ranks.
The 41-year old will have a tough task on his hands as Bayern Munich board members and fans alike are expecting nothing more than trophies after enduring two trophyless seasons. The Bavarians finished runners-up in the Champions League and the Bundesliga and will be hoping that Sammer can steer the club to titles next season.
