Nuri Sahin has torpedoed Real Madrid’s plan to offer him as part of a package to secure Luka Modric from Tottenham Hotspur.
Jose Mourinho’s men have made signing Croatian playmaker Modric a priority for the summer and La Liga’s champions are confident about doing a deal with Spurs for a player they believe is desperate to land at the Bernabeu.
However, Los Blancos had hoped to throw Sahin into the deal in order to reduce the cash outlay which will be required; Spurs were also believed to be keen on taking the Turkey international to White Hart Lane.
But according to AS, Sahin has informed Real Madrid that he is not willing to serve as makeweight in the transfer.
This leaves Real Madrid looking at paying out up to €50M to sign Modric, an amount which may make eyes water in the Spanish side’s boardroom.
A game of brinkmanship now looks set to develop over the summer, with Mourinho’s men hoping Modric’s desire to move to Spain will help to push down his eventual sale price.
Sahin meanwhile remains determined to establish himself at Real Madrid and cast off the "flop" tag.
