Sampdoria have appointed former Juventus boss Ciro Ferrara as their new coach.

The 1992 European Cup finalists, who secured promotion to Serie A last season, saw a bid to tempt former Inter coach Rafael Benitez to the club fail last week.

Sampdoria quickly switched their attention to Ferrara and the Italian has been only too eager to agree to take over.

Ferrara has most recently been in charge of Italy’s Under-21 side, but previously had a forgettable spell in charge of Juventus in the 2009/10 campaign.

The former central defender has been keen to get back into Serie A and prove his worth in the dugout.

Ferrara will be tasked with ensuring Sampdoria steer well clear of the drop zone in 2012/13.
