Inter Milan have been looking to strengthen their squad for the 2012/13 season after the club finished a disappointing sixth in Serie A. And over the past few days, Samir Handanovic has been heavily linked with the Nerazzurri – and after negotiations with Udinese, the clubs have finally reached an agreement.
Udinese have now agreed to sell the Slovenian for €11M, while the deal also includes the transfer of Inter full-back Davide Faraoni to the Zabrette.
The Slovenian shot-stopper signed for Udinese in 2004, and after impressing the club management during spells on loan, was made the number 1 goalkeeper at the Zebrette in 2007. He has been the club’s first choice since 2007 and has played almost all Serie A games since.
Handanovic was linked with a move away from Udinese in 2011 as well, but the player ended all speculation by signing a five-year contract with the Udine-based outfit. However, after reported interest from Inter this summer, it seems that the goalkeeper has decided that it is time for him to move on.
The Nerazzurri were on the lookout for a solid keeper to replace the ageing Julio Cesar and earmarked the 27-year-old Slovenian for this purpose. Handanovic was excellent for Udinese last season, conceding just 35 goals while making crucial penalty saves.
The future of Julio Cesar is now in doubt after Handanovic’s imminent arrival at the San Siro. It remains to be seen whether the 32-year-old Brazilian will stay and fight for the number 1 spot with Handanovic or will decide to leave the club he joined in 2006.
