Jean-Alain Boumsong is closing on agreeing a new contract with Greek giants Panathinaikos.

The 32-year-old centre back was recently linked with a move back to England, where he played for Newcastle United between 2005 and 2006.

But according to French sports daily L’Equipe, negotiations between the player and his current club, Panathinaikos, over a contract extension are progressing well.

Indeed, the Frenchman has already agreed in principle to stay in Athens until 2014, as long as the financial aspect of his contract can be ironed out.

Panathinaikos, as with all Greek clubs, are under pressure to cut costs, but keeping Boumsong would be a boost to the Greens.

The defender joined Panathinaikos in 2010 from Ligue 1 outfit Lyon.

He made 17 appearances in the Greek Super League last season.
