Tottenham Hotspur have beaten Liverpool to the signing of Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Both Spurs and the Reds had offers accepted by Sigurdsson’s Bundesliga side Hoffenheim, but after much consideration the starlet has decided he would be better served by landing at White Hart Lane.

And this despite Sigurdsson enjoying a fine relationship with new Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, with whom he worked during a loan stint at Swansea City last season.

Indeed, Sigurdsson had been poised to move permanently to the Welsh outfit before Rodgers’ move to take over the Anfield hot seat caused cold feet and a rethink.

The Iceland international becomes new Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas’ first signing at White Hart Lane.

Sigurdsson fits the profile of player Spurs are currently searching for as they bid to bring the average age of their squad down.
