Schalke have snapped up Swiss midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta after his contract with Bayer Leverkusen expired.

The 27-year-old, who has been linked with a number of clubs over the last 12 months, has penned a three-year deal with the Ruhr giants.

Barnetta was attracted to signing for Schalke by the prospect of Champions League football, which was sufficiently enticing to convince the player to end an eight-year stint at Leverkusen.

In total Barnetta made 194 appearances in the Bundesliga for Leverkusen, scoring 25 goals in the process.

At international level he has picked up 61 caps for Switzerland.
