Brazilian defender Breno has been convicted of aggravated arson and sentenced to three years and nine months in prison.

The 22-year-old has been found guilty of setting fire to a villa he had been renting in the Munich suburb of Grunwald; the Brazilian was playing for Bayern Munich at the time.

He was arrested in September over the incident, which saw €1.5M worth of damage done to the villa.

Breno had been released on bail of €500,000 and even travelled with Bayern Munich to their winter training camp in Qatar.

The 22-year-old saw his contract expire at Bayern Munich at the end of last season.

Breno’s lawyers had argued that the player was suffering from depression at the time of the incident, and was drinking heavily. The Brazilian’s wife and children had left the house days before the fire was started.

Bayern Munich have pledged to continue to support Breno.
