Montpellier are very close to replacing Olivier Giroud, who was Ligue 1’s top scorer last season, with Union Espanola’s frontman Emmanuel Herrera.
The reigning French champions were in the market for an intelligent forward to lead the line after Arsenal snapped up MHSC’s Giroud after the European Championship ended in late June. Montpellier scouted a fair number of strikers before finally settling on Union Espanola’s top man Herrera.
The 25-year-old Argentine holds a prolific scoring record in Chile and has found the net on 10 occasions in 17 appearances for the Panaderos in the Primera Division. The striker rose to recognition just last season, scoring 16 and creating another six in 29 games for his team in all competitions.
Montpellier were left fuming when they had to let their top scorer Giroud leave for just €12M to Arsenal after the Gunners found that the French forward had a buy-out clause in his contract. However, it seems that the Ligue 1 champions have finally found a replacement for the French international in Herrera.
MHSC owner Louis Nicollin has said that negotiations are under way with the Argentine club for the transfer of Herrera. It is to be believed now that the clubs have reached an agreement over the deal and that the Argentine is very close to penning a two-year contract with the champions of France.
The 25-year-old striker is going to have a tough job on his hands replacing Giroud who netted 21 goals in Ligue 1 for Montpellier last season.
