Louis van Gaal has been appointed as the new Holland coach.

The Dutch football association (KNVB) have been searching for a successor to Bert van Marwijk, who stepped down from his role after a disappointing Euro 2012.

And Van Gaal who spent last season out of the game after parting company with Bayern Munich in 2011, has been only too delighted to answer the call of his national side.

"I am pleased the KNVB approached me. This is the challenge that I was waiting for", said Van Gaal in a statement.

The KNVB are also happy to have snared the former Barcelona boss.

"We needed a coach with a wealth of experience and someone personally and professionally in the ascendancy", said KNVB director Bert van Oostveen.

"Van Gaal has a proven record both nationally and internationally and we know he is a very devoted and passionate coach."
