Marco van Basten has expressed his surprise at the appointment of Louis van Gaal as the new Holland coach.
Van Basten, who has taken over at Eredivisie side Heerenveen, had been linked with a return to the post he held between 2004 and 2008 when Bert van Marwijk left his post after Euro 2012.
For the former AC Milan striker, there was never any realistic possibility of that however, as he had only just agreed to take over as coach at Heerenveen.
Now the 47-year-old will be keeping a keen eye on developments under Van Gaal at the Oranje.
"I’m surprised", admitted Van Basten about the appointment.
"In itself, I think Van Gaal is a good choice.
"He is an experienced coach. I wonder how he will do."
