It has been claimed by Croatian newspaper 24sata that Luka Modric has agreed personal terms with Real Madrid and is now simply waiting for Los Blancos to hammer out a fee with Tottenham Hotspur.
Modric has become the summer’s transfer priority at the Bernabeu, despite it not being immediately clear just what part he will play at Jose Mourinho’s La Liga champions.
Real Madrid were mooted as being willing to send Turkey midfielder Nuri Sahin to White Hart Lane as part of a deal for Modric, chiefly to keep the cash outlay needed down to a minimum – but the schemer rejected the idea of leaving Los Blancos.
Now Real Madrid must come to an agreement with Spurs, although according to 24sata, the deal with Modric himself is done.
The playmaker is reported as having agreed the outline of a contract with Mourinho’s men, though it is of course conditional on a fee being thrashed out with Modric’s English club.
That could still be difficult given Tottenham’s reputation as always driving a hard bargain in the transfer market.
Nevertheless, Real Madrid look determined to sign Modric as they bid to retain the title they managed to take from arch-rivals Barcelona last season.
Spurs are thought to be looking for a minimum of €50M for Modric.
