Wealthy French side Monaco had an ambitious target before eventually appointing Claudio Ranieri as coach – Manchester City’s Roberto Mancini.

According to L’Equipe, the Ligue 2 outfit contacted Mancini’s representatives to transmit the offer of a five-year deal worth a whopping €8M per year for the Italian to move to the Stade Louis II.

But the answer from the Citizens boss was, predictably, ‘no’.

That caused Monaco to turn their attention to former Inter coach Ranieri, who was duly appointed at the principality outfit.

Monaco were taken over by Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev in December of last year, with money instantly made available to push the side back into the French top flight.

Despite a late surge, the cash came too late to help Monaco gain promotion from Ligue 2 last season.

Nothing less than a return to Ligue 1 will be expected of Ranieri for the 2012/13 campaign.
