Luka Modric has told Tottenham Hotspur that he wants to play for Real Madrid, according to Spanish daily AS, and Jose Mourinho’s men will allow Ricardo Carvalho to head the other way to help the Croatian get his wish.
Modric is believed to have already agreed personal terms with Los Blancos and the only obstacle remaining is the thrashing out of a transfer fee with Spurs.
The English Premier League giants have started from a point of €50M, though sources in Spain have indicated they are now prepared to settle for €40M, faced with a player who is desperate to turn out at the Bernabeu next season.
Real Madrid though want to push this sum down further and are prepared to pay €35M plus veteran Portuguese defender Carvalho.
Los Blancos are well aware that new Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas wants to add his countryman to his coaching staff at White Hart Lane, enjoying a good relationship with the former Chelsea defender, and Carvalho is also hugely experienced in the Premier League on the pitch too.
Mourinho had been willing to allow Turkey midfielder Nuri Sahin to go to Spurs as part of the deal but, despite Villas-Boas being keen, the player himself does not want to leave the Bernabeu.
It remains to be seen whether Spurs will accept Real Madrid’s proposal and the White Hart Lane outfit have a reputation for being shrewd operators in the transfer market; chairman Daniel Levy will want to realise the highest possible fee for Modric.
The Croatian has impressed Mourinho, who now wants him to be part of his Real Madrid machine. Though where Modric might fit in is not immediately clear.
