Reports that Marcelo Bielsa had resigned from his managerial position at Athletic Bilbao were cooled as the Argentine took charge of training as normal today.
It was widely confirmed that Bielsa had given his resignation to the club directors after he was criticised by the board for his conduct towards a staff worker at the training ground. The former Chilean coach had made his displeasure known to a worker on the slow pace at which the work was being done on Bilbao’s training base.
The former Espanyol coach was not only reprimanded by the board for his conduct towards the worker but was also given a slap on the wrist for airing his concerns in public. The temperamental man from Argentina was not happy at Athletic Bilbao’s directors and reports confirmed that he had handed in his resignation.
However, almost everyone was shocked when Bielsa turned up to train the Basque players this morning and resumed his duties as normal.
Bielsa was highly praised for his work with Athletic Bilbao last season as he guided the team to Europa League and Copa del Rey finals. Even though the Basque side lost both finals, the way the Argentine managed the young team received praise from all quarters.
A lot of Athletic Bilbao fans will have heaved a sigh of relief after seeing the 56-year-old continue his duties as the manager of Los Leones.
