Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson could launch a swoop for Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao this summer and is keeping tabs on the 26-year-old, according to Spanish daily AS.
Atletico Madrid are in a delicate situation as they still owe FC Porto €28M from the €40M transfer of Falcao last year.
And so Diego Simeone’s men may be forced to part with the prolific Colombian forward, despite clearly wanting him to remain at the Vicente Calderon for 2012/13.
Porto have a stake in determining Falcao’s destination and would be open to the striker joining Manchester United.
Indeed, the Portuguese giants are willing to see Falcao head anywhere to allow Atletico Madrid to settle their debt, except to Champions League winners Chelsea.
If the Colombian was sold to the Stamford Bridge outfit then it is likely the Blues could drop their interest in Porto hitman Hulk, scuppering a big money summer sale for the Portuguese champions.
At Old Trafford, Ferguson is on the lookout for a world-class striker to add to his squad.
He is a long-time admirer of Fernando Llorente and could still choose to swoop for the powerful Spanish forward, having been linked of late. But the idea of bidding for Falcao, a player Atletico Madrid may be forced to sell, is gaining traction at the Red Devils.
And with Ferguson already having lost out on one player to Chelsea this summer, in the form of Eden Hazard, beating the Blues to Falcao would be compensation of sorts and provide the 19-time English champions with a boost ahead of the new season.
