Ajax have focused their attention on young Barcelona defender Marc Muniesa as they look to sign a replacement for Jan Vertonghen, who has been sold to Tottenham Hotspur.
While Ajax coach Frank de Boer has been keen to bring in an experienced centre back, the 20-year-old Muniesa is rated extremely highly at the Amsterdam ArenA.
Last season the player turned out for Barcelona’s B team, making 24 appearances in league competition for the side.
Earlier this year Muniesa was rewarded for his fine displays with a new contract at the Camp Nou and was also told he will be promoted to the senior Barcelona side for the 2012/13 campaign.
Ajax would however be likely to offer the 20-year-old more first team football than he would receive at Barcelona in the coming season and the Blaugrana could be willing to consider parting with Muniesa, even if only on loan.
De Boer is also looking closely at AZ defender Niklas Moisander and NEC starlet Bram Nuytinck.
