Bayer Leverkusen’s CEO has left the door ajar for teams interested in striker Andre Schurrle to lure him away from the German giants.
Wolfgang Holzhauser, Werkself’s CEO, said that he cannot rule out the sale of the 21-year-old, but he did state that the club would be looking for a better bid than the amount Chelsea tabled recently. The Blues bid in excess of €25M a few days ago, but the Leverkusen management decided to reject the offer.
“I am not keen on ruling anything out at this point in time, but personally I stopped thinking about it [the Chelsea bid] last weekend”, said Holzhauser in an interview with the Rheinische Post newspaper.
The CEO disclosed the reason for rejecting the big money offer from the reigning Champions League winners too.
“Of course, we seriously considered the offer – of course we did. But we still came to the conclusion that we would not be able to sign an adequate and affordable replacement for Andre Schurrle”, revealed the 62-year-old.
Schurrle played an integral role in Bayer Leverkusen’s fifth place finish in the Bundesliga last season and scored seven important goals.
The German international, who has 16 caps to his name, joined the Leverkusen-based club last year and still has four years remaining on his contract.
It remains to be seen how Chelsea will react to Holzhauser’s comments and whether the Premier League giants will make an improved bid for the talented forward or not.
