Ajax coach Frank de Boer has held a meeting with Vurnon Anita and his agent in a bid to reassure the player of his role at the Amsterdam ArenA.
Anita has been heavily linked with English Premier League outfit Newcastle United this summer, with the Magpies even going so far as putting in a bid for the 23-year-old; and the Dutchman’s agent did state he expects Alan Pardew’s side to return with an improved offer.
But Ajax want to keep the player and will only alter that position if an extremely high bid is made.
And now the Eredivisie champions have moved to reassure Anita that remaining would be best for his long term future.
"It was a very pleasant meeting", Anita’s agent Harry Lulofs told De Telegraaf.
"Henk ten Cate, Marco van Basten and Martin Jol did not know whether Vurnon was a right-back, left-back or midfielder, but Frank sees him as a defensive midfielder and really rates him highly."
Lulofs also explained that there will be more talking to do, with an ultimate decision needing to be made over whether to extend the player’s contract or sell him.
"He saw it as being a case of opening talks over extending the current contract, which runs until 2014, or breaking it.
"There will be a follow up appointment with De Boer and Marc Overmars, who plan to further develop this or think about a transfer."
Anita is a product of Ajax’s legendary youth academy and made his debut with the senior side in 2005.
Having already lost influential defender Jan Vertonghen this summer, the Dutch giants are unlikely to want to lose another key player.
