Rangers will play their football in Scotland’s fourth tier next season.
Having reformed as a new company after the old Rangers were liquidated with large debts, the Glasgow giants were recently denied entry into the Scottish Premier League, leaving them to apply for a place in the Scottish Football League today.
The options on the table for the SFL clubs to consider were parachuting Rangers into Division One, or insisting the club start life in Division Three.
In a vote 25 of the 30 SFL clubs have chosen the latter.
Rangers will therefore start life as a Division Three club and, assuming promotion is secured in successive seasons, should return to the top flight in time for the 2015/16 campaign.
While the decision is a blow to Rangers’ hopes of a quick return to the SPL, it does at least provide the Ibrox outfit with some certainty over in which league they will play next season.
