Ajax’s director of football Marc Overmars has confirmed that the Dutch team are interested in snapping up Barcelona defender Marc Muniesa on loan.

The former Arsenal man told De Telegraaf that his side are keeping tabs on the young Spanish defender and are only waiting for the player to extend his contract with Barcelona before signing him up on a one-year loan deal.

“FC Barcelona will discuss a contract extension with Marc Muniesa on Tuesday. Once he signs the extension, we will move in to negotiate a deal for the player with Barcelona. We are looking to sign Muniesa on a one-year loan deal”, said Overmars.

Muniesa is an academy product and has featured in around 70 games in the Segunda Division for Barcelona’s B-team. The 20-year-old played in 24 matches and scored a goal for the B-team last season. His impressive performances even earned him a senior team appearance in La Liga.

The Blaugrana academy product usually plays as a central defender but is equally adept at playing as a left full-back. It is little surprise therefore that Ajax’s coach is excited at the prospect of getting the young player on loan.

“He has played a lot of matches played in the Segunda Division", said Ajax manager Frank de Boer. "I have seen DVDs of him. He has a good left leg and will fit well in the squad.”

While shedding light on the 20-year-old’s best position, the experienced coach said, “I don’t think he will turn out to be a good defensive midfielder. But he will be a feasible option as a left-back or as left centre-back.”
