Giuseppe Marotta, the director general and CEO of reigning Serie A champions Juventus, believes that while Dutch forward Robin van Persie would be a dream signing, the Bianconeri have to remain realistic over their potential additions.
Arsenal captain and striker Van Persie has been linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium this summer after refusing to sign an extension to a contract that expires in 2013 – and Juventus remain one of the likeliest destinations for the forward.
The 29-year-old has gone public with his desire to not extend his deal with the Gunners and it now seems likely that Arsenal will be ready to sell their star man if the price is right.
However, the Old Lady’s CEO Marotta has dropped a hint that the left-footed striker may well be beyond Juventus’ reach.
The Bianconeri’s director general feels that even though he would love to have Van Persie at the club, his transfer fee may prove to be a stumbling block for the current Serie A champions.
“You always have dreams and ambitions”, said the 57-year-old Italian to Gazzetta dello Sport when asked about the Dutchman.
“However, you must also contend with the reality of everyday facts. Calmly, we know what we can do and this is the most important thing.”
Marotta’s statement reaffirms that the Old Lady are interested in the Gunners forward, but unless the Emirates outfit are ready to talk lower numbers in terms of a transfer fee, Juventus will not be able to strike a deal.
Van Persie, who scored 30 goals in the Premier League last season, has also been linked with Manchester City, Manchester United and Barcelona, and it appears that the transfer saga will not end quickly.
