Former Chelsea defender Khalid Boulahrouz has completed his free transfer to Sporting Lisbon after penning a two-year contract with Portuguese club.

The Dutch defender was a free agent this summer after his ex-employers VfB Stuttgart decided not to renew his contract at the club. Many sides were in the running for the central defender but the player chose Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon.

Boulahrouz has turned out for various clubs in his career. The versatile defender started at RKC Waalwijk in 2001 before moving to Hamburg in 2004. He then joined Chelsea in 2006 and after enduring a difficult time at Stamford Bridge, returned to Germany with Stuttgart in 2008.

And now after four years at Stuttgart, he is ready to start a new journey with the Leoes. The 30-year-old has expressed his happiness at joining the side and said that he wants to win titles with the Estadio Jose Alvalade outfit.

"I am very ambitious. I like the club and I have a feeling that I can fit in well at the club”, the defender told Sporting’s official website.

“I have come here to help the team win titles and I will give everything to achieve this goal.”

Boulahrouz appeared in 21 games for Stuttgart last season and was also a part of the Dutch Euro 2012 squad. The Leoes fans will be hoping that the defender can provide stability at the back and help the club win back the title after 11 years.
