Thorgan Hazard, the younger brother of Eden Hazard, is expected to be unveiled as a Chelsea player imminenty after Lens’ sporting director confirmed that a deal has been struck with the Blues for the youngster.
The 19-year-old has been consistently linked with the Stamford Bridge outfit after his elder brother Eden signed for Chelsea this summer.
The young winger’s stay at Lens has been short and the player is about to leave the club after spending only a year at Stade Felix Bollaert.
Lens’ sporting director Antoine Sibierski confirmed the imminent departure of the Belgian and said that the transfer would become official within the next 24 hours, “It should be official tomorrow”, the 37-year-old told Lens’ official website.
Sibierski stated that the player has one year remaining on his current contract, which the Ligue 2 side were willing to extend. However, he added that the winger had his heart set on Chelsea from the moment the Blues became interested and Lens had no choice but to let the exciting talent leave.
“He still had one year left on his contract. We offered him an extension, but he told me in confidence that he was not interested and that he wanted to leave Lens”, said the sporting director. “And I realised, after 48 hours, why, when I learned that Chelsea wanted him”.
Thorgan’s manager at Lens, Jean-Louis Garcia, congratulated the Belgian Under-23 international on the prospect of joining the reigning Champions League winners and said that the French side had no choice but to let him go once the English giants came calling.
“Congratulations to Thorgan. Thorgan’s elder brother signed for Chelsea and then the same club urged the 19-year-old to join his elder brother. Unfortunately we cannot deny the boy such an opportunity”, commented Garcia.
The young Belgian will become the Stamford Bridge outfit’s third high profile capture this summer, after Marko Marin and Eden Hazard.
