Feyenoord technical director Martin van Geel finds Aston Villa’s approach towards signing defender Ron Vlaar to be baffling.
The English Premier League outfit are interested in Vlaar and invited the Dutchman to Villa Park with his agent last weekend.
Vlaar’s visit to England, which had Feyenoord’s blessing, went well and the defender arrived back home delighted at the positive talks and impressed by the set-up at Aston Villa.
Feyenoord have been preparing to field a bid of €4M for the 27-year-old, which is the amount of the clause in the player’s contract – but Paul Lambert’s side have not pushed ahead with their expected approach.
Van Geel is at a loss to explain Villa’s behaviour.
"We are waiting. We will not contact them. We’d rather they did not call because that means that Ron will be staying at Feyenoord", Van Geel told Eredivisie Live.
"We would like to know what is going on", he added.
And Feyenoord coach Ronald Koeman is also waiting for clarification over Vlaar’s future, which will affect whether he is played in the club’s remaining friendly fixtures.
"Ron’s agent said something should happen this weekend. Otherwise it does not happen", said Koeman.
"He was there on Sunday for the first time and it is very strange that there is no contact with them.
"It is not difficult. They know exactly how much he costs."
